Chihuahua is home to several large Mennonite communities, emigrated from Canada in the 1920s. Known for their tight-knit families and principles of shared labor, they have turned thousands of acres of desert into verdant and productive farmland.
Recently we trekked to the farm of a pastor friend in Oasis, about 1½ hours northeast of Camargo. The community produces beef and dairy cattle, fruit and pecan orchards, corn, alfalfa, cotton – even peanuts!
Besides unity within their settlements, the farmers are open-hearted to share the bounty with others. When our host family learned of Bajo Sus Alas’ efforts to help children and displaced families, they surprised us with two tons corn for our ministry!
“Now He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for eating, may He supply and multiply your seed, and increase the fruits of your righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 9:10)
